MY MOMENTS IN THE SPELLING BEE COMPETETION

All the excitement began when Beena miss informed me about a spelling competition called ‘spelling champs’, conducted by ESPN to be held in Delhi. I and my schoolmate from 7th,Joel was selected to represent our school in the competition. It was to be held from 7th to 12th June in Delhi. It was a big competition and had participants from all over the country. On the morning of 7th June we boarded our flight to Delhi. From there we were escorted to a hotel in Vasant Vihar called Jaypee Vasant Continental hotel. There began our first camera shoot. They asked us, about how we had prepared for the competition and many others. In the evening we had a sports quiz, and that was the end of our first day in Delhi. Next day, we were taken to visit the famous monuments. We went to Red Fort India gate, humayun’s tomb and many others. After that we were taken to the Ryan International School Vasant Kunj, where the competition was to be held. We had our very first round called ‘spellathon dictation’ in which we forced well enough .Next ,we were given tips on how to face a camera. There were 52 contestants. On the next day, began the real competition. The second part of the first round was called ‘word spell in which we were given two words to spell in one and a half minutes. I got both of them right, and four entered the next round but unfortunately my friend lost. The next day, 10th June, I had the second round before which my friends and I had session with the word commissner and novelist Rana das gupta about the important of words. The second round was called ‘wordsmith’ in which we were to correct misspelled words in the sentences in two minutes. I got 4 out 5 words correct and entered the third round. As the rounds passed, the competition became tougher and at the end of second round only 20 spellers remained. In the evening we had our third round-word categories round in which we were given 4 categories and we had to choose one from which we were given 3 words .I got two out of three and entered the diebreaker, but I failed and couldn’t make it to the next round. Then the rounds continued and in the finals,Riroune Balachadran who won the competition as well as a trip to South Africa for champions trophy. That day marked the end of the wonderful competition through which we had gained great experience. On 12th June we boarded our flight to cochin and got back to our usual routine. We thank our principal and vice-principal and ESPN for providing us with this wonderful opportunity.
